Pedagogy

Teaching methods at the Institute of Management and Development include - lectures, case studies, seminars, group discussions, self managing teams, business games, role plays, simulation exercises, structured and unstructured group work and field/industrial visits. The emphasis is on involving the students in learning and helping them to relate concepts and theories to business requirements. Consistent with advances in teaching technology, the programme integrates the use of computers in learning the basic principles in different functional areas of management. It also enables students to acquire skills in identifying and dealing with complex problems in management. The students also undertake several field-based projects so that they can get better insights into the business workplace reality. The curriculum is revised on an ongoing basis through discussions with practicing managers from the industry to reflect current business needs.

Programme Structure

The curriculum is spread over four terms of about six months each. The core curriculum is spread over three terms with the bulk of it covered in the first two terms. The core curriculum teaches you the ability to communicate, analyze situations and take decisions using qualitative and quantitative factors, develop a wholistic view of the different functional areas and the business environment. During this period students take courses in general management and major functional areas, such as finance and accounting, marketing, operations management, organizational behaviour, human resource and strategic management. They are also exposed to the basic disciplines of economics, behavioral sciences, information technology, quantitative methods and decision sciences.

Corporate Internship / Training

At the end of the first two terms, the students go for an industry internship or summer training with an organization. The internship usually spans over an eight to ten-week period. This is a compulsory component of the curriculum for the completion of the programme and is designed to provide exposure to organizations working, develop an understanding of business realities and an opportunity to apply tools and techniques to real life business situations. The Summer Internship is evaluated by the organization. In the second year, the students take elective/optional courses and can specialize in a maximum of two functional areas. These areas are - Finance, Human Resource Management, Information Technology Management, Marketing, International Business and Production & Operations Management. All concentration packages however may not be offered, as this would be determined by the number(s) of students showing interest in majoring in the different areas.
